Washington D.C. - Today, Dr. Dan Clemens, Chair of the Board of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), announced the initiation of a search for the position of AURA President. The selectee would succeed Dr. William S. Smith who has served as President since 2000.
In announcing the search, Dr. Clemens said "After 13 years of strong service to AURA, Dr. Smith has indicated he will not seek a fourth term. AURA will begin the process of identifying high quality leaders with the vision and experience to lead AURA in the future." Dr. Smith’s present term will end February 1, 2015.
In November, the AURA Board commissioned a Search Committee, consisting of a Chair, Dr. Bruce Carney, and members Dr. Betsy Hoffman, Dr. B. Thomas Soifer, Dr. Robert Shelton, Mr. A. Thomas Young, Dr. Garth Illingworth, and Dr. Caty Pilachowski.
The Search Committee is charged to find suitable candidates as well as to receive and evaluate referrals and nominations. A full job advertisement, released today, sets dates of 1 May 2014 for full consideration of completed applications and 1 February 2015 for the nominal start date of the new AURA President.
The Search Committee will seek input from AURA employees as well as others regarding who might be good candidates as well as the traits the best candidates should exhibit. In releasing the job announcement, Dr. Clemens said "We, as AURA, look forward to continued strong leadership through this search and transition period, to the continued strong management of our observatories and projects, and to the input and involvement of AURA employees and community members in helping AURA's constant forward evolution."
